Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag

“Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag” (Manila: in the Claws of Light) is considered by many critics to be the greatest Philippine film ever made. Directed by Lino Brocka in 1975 and based on the story “Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag” written by Edgardo Reyes, the film tells the story of a young provincial named Julio Madiaga (Bembol Roco) who goes to Manila looking for his lost love, Ligaya Paraiso (Hilda Koronel). The episodic plot has him careering from one adventure to another until he finally finds Ligaya.

Much of the film’s greatness can be traced to the excellent cinematography by Mike de Leon. The film won FAMAS awards for best picture, best director, best actor, and best supporting actor.

YouTube user Rebeltube uploaded the complete film and compiled it in this playlist. Here’s part 1 of 14 of the Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag uploaded in YouTube.
